Scalloped Headbands {FREE Crochet Pattern of the Month}

Hullo peeps!

I am very pleased to introduce a new series! I will be offering a FREE crochet pattern each month, hence the very clever name "Pattern of the Month". There are several ways to subscribe in the sidebar at right so you don't miss out :-)

Now, on to the first pattern!

I am in the process of growing out my hair. I love having it short, but I miss my up dos (and by up dos I mean unimaginative ponytails). I needed something to catch the shorter layers in front, so I made these scalloped headbands. They are easy and quick!

You'll need yarn in the color of your choice, a size G hook, and a hair elastic.

UPDATE 7/8/13: A couple people have found the starting chain to be too small (who knew I was a pinhead?). I suggest measuring your noggin with a piece of yarn right where you want the headband to sit and then making your foundation chain a few inches shorter than that. Good luck! :)

Abbreviations are as follows:

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sk = skip

First attach your hair elastic like this:

Now ch 48 more.

Then attach your foundation chain to the hair elastic again like this:

Turn. *Skip 1 ch, sc 6 times in next ch, skip 1 ch, sl st in next ch*. Repeat from * to * to end.

 Sl st in final ch. Finish off. Weave in ends.

Voila!

Ze obligatory action shots:

And ze close up:

I made these in a whole bunch of colors with yarn leftover from my rainbow scarf. Hopefully they'll discourage me from chopping all my hair off again.

Of course, they would also look adorable with a pixie cut ...

Hmm.
While you're here, learn how to make a crochet hook bandolier!
Linking up at these lovely places:

UPDATE: If you're confused about how exactly the elastic is attached to the headband, here's a full picture of them off my noggin :) Hope it helps!

:-)

    1. I must be dense. I still don't understand how it attaches to your head. I haven't made it yet, but will when I figure this out. I, too, am growing out my hair.

    2. It's a basic headband; it just slips over your head. You start with a hair elastic, attach your thread, crochet the scalloped portion, and then attach it to the hair elastic again.This forms a solid loop and adds stretch so it stays in place. I'm sorry, I'm not sure how else to describe it. Hopefully that helps a little :) Good luck!

  4. What size headband do you start out with? The picture makes it look like those small kind, but that wouldn't work.

    1. Hullo,

      I didn't use a headband, just attached yarn to a hair elastic and made a foundation chain to start. :)

    1. Hello,

      The hair elastic is attached to both ends of the crocheted piece. I have a picture of just the headbands; I'll upload it later today.

      Hopefully that will help! :)

    1. I think it would depend on the kid. If they're handy, measure their head where the headband will sit with a spare piece of yarn and make your foundation chain a few inches smaller. Just from eyeballing the ones I made I'd guess a foundation chain of 44-46ish? I don't have any six year olds around here to test it on, thougj :) Good luck!

    1. I've heard this from a few people. Evidently I am a pinhead :) I'll put a note in the post suggesting measuring first. Thanks for the feedback!

  12. Thanks for the cute easy to follow tutorial! I made one and then crocheted in the other side of the chain (sc 6 in same st as sc 6 on back, and sl in same sl on reverse side) and it made a cute little semi-circle for a one off.

  18. This is a great idea! I'm always struggling with the fact that my headbands get stretched out!!! Now I can use this on a number of pattern ideas.

    Thank you!!!

  19. Found your link on AllFreeCrochet and enjoy it very much. Would suggest if need to enlarge the headband use multiples of three for the count to come out correct. I used double strands of different colors of size 10 crochet thread for a different look. Came out very nice. Keep up the good work!

  20. do you think these would sell in a consignment store?

  21. I made one per your pattern, too small. So I put two elastic bands together and followed the pattern with the change of a row of single crochet first and then the pattern stitch. It fits me perfectly! Wish I could figure out how to add a picture :) Going to give them to my DIL and granddaughter, they can have almost matching hairbands!
